The following was written as a postgraduate thesis within the framework of the Master’s Programme ‘Science of Translation’ offered by the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpretation of the Ionian University. The thesis was submitted during the academic year 2021- 22 and the third semester of the aforementioned Master’s Program. The main focus of this thesis is the analysis of the kind of political discourse that we would define as populist, while, alongside this analysis, a reference is made to the translation of populist discourse and specifically to the challenges that it can pose to the subject performing the translation. The thesis revolves around the political discourse communicated by the political leaders of two parties of the so-called Popular Right or Extreme Right in France and Spain. The consequent translation of their words into Greek is also worth commenting, due to the very nature of populist discourse.

Η παρούσα εργασία επιχειρεί να εξετάσει και να κατανοήσει την Μουσική Παραγωγή της Κούβας, μέσα από τη μελέτη των μουσικών οργάνων της Χώρας, της εξέλιξής τους και τη σχέση και σύνδεση αυτών με την Κοινωνική και Θρησκευτική παράδοση του νησιού. Η δομή της Εργασίας ακολουθεί την ταξινόμηση των μουσικών οργάνων, κατά το σύστημα Χορνμπόστελ-Σάκς. Έτσι, σε κάθε κεφάλαιο, εξετάζονται τα μουσικά όργανα της Κούβας,- ιδιόφωνα, μεμβρανόφωνα, χορδόφωνα, αερόφωνα-, και καθ΄αυτόν τον τρόπο παρουσιάζονται τα μουσικά είδη που συνδέονται με κάθε μουσικό όργανο, καθώς και παρατίθενται πληροφορίες για τη χώρα, τη σχέση και σύνδεση της μουσικής δραστηριότητας με την κοινωνική και θρησκευτική ζωή και της δραστηριότητες και έθιμα αυτών. Η εργασία αναφέρει και ηχητικά ντοκουμέντα ως παραδείγματα, για τα οποία αναγράφονται πηγές, καθώς και φωτογραφικό και εικονιστικό υλικό.

The text consists of three legal texts of different content, that have as a central theme the rights and demands of the people of Latin America. More specifically, the first extract is a purely legal text that refers to the objectives and functions of the Organization of American States regarding the protection of fundamental human rights as well as the establishment of the Inter-American Commission and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. In addition, the extract highlights all the procedures and decisions taken in Costa Rica to protect the fundamental rights of the individual. The second text is an adjudication of the American Court and refers to the case of the indigenous people "kuna de madungandí" and "emberá de bayano" who opposed the state of Panama, forcing the latter to compensate after violating their right to collective property. Finally, the third text is part of the Court's decision regarding the case of Maria Eugenia Villasenior Velarde et al. against the government of Guatemala. Following violations of some of her rights, the Court ordered the imposition of sanctions and remedial measures against her.

Interlingual subtitling for the d/Deaf and the hard-of-hearing, as a type of audiovisual translation, enables access to audiovisual content by people with hearing loss or hearing impairment. In our dissertation, we discuss the characteristics of this particular type of audiovisual translation, the legal framework in Greece concerning subtitling for the d/Deaf and the hard-of-hearing, as well as the reality of subtitling in the country, and whether or not the legislation is implemented in practice. Finally, we discuss our own experience on this matter, by explaining the methodology and the process employed for the subtitling of Disney’s animated film, Frozen II, for the d/Deaf and the hard-of-hearing.

The original text is an extract from a magazine, called Nuestra America, a magazine that deals primarily with current issues in Latin America, in the fields of art, politics and economics etc. In this case, the magazine pays tribute to Eduardo Galeano’s life and work, on the occasion of the author’s death. The text consists of a brief biography, an interview of Galeano and an essay written by him, titled Úselo y Tírelo. Eduardo Galeano, one of the most important authors of Latin America, explains his way of writing and the whole of his work. Furthermore, he describes the new generation of Latin Americans, that must face major social problems, such as the economic dependency on the powerful centers of Europe and North America. Finally, the third part of the text is a passage of a short essay of Galeano, titled Úselo y Tírelo, published in 1994 and describes the reality of the Latin American countries. More specifically, he explains how the consumerist societies end up having a disastrous impact on the economy and the environment. At the same time, he clarifies how the development of the West translates to the poverty and misery of Latin America. Apart from the environmental consequences, Galeano mentions the “second-class” people, the poorest social classes in the Latin America countries, mainly in Brazil and Colombia, pointing out the role that Latin America has taken on in the world.

Our research effort aims at applying concepts and methods proposed by Raymond Williams regarding creativity, culture, individuals and societies, and images of society on Don Quixote de Miguel de Cervantes, highlighting the sometimes total or partial success or failure of the identification of the two distinct descriptions and perspectives. The individual aims of the study, therefore, are initially focused on the identification and understanding of the two perspectives, on their following comparison, where this is possible, and on the application of Williams’ theory to the whole work of Don Quixote in the cases where corresponding and proposed concepts on the part of Cervantes are not identified. By broadening the concept of “culture”, the Welsh theorist succeeds in including areas of reality that until then were unable to penetrate the various theoretical descriptions and definitions, offering us a comprehensive perspective, which contributed, in turn, to a more complete understanding of man and society. A brief assessment of the two distinct perspectives emphasized the invaluable contribution of art to the study of cultural issues, as well as the need to broaden the approach with which we study cultural and social issues, in general, and with which we seek ways of interpreting and understanding society.

My undergraduate thesis focuses on the analysis of the translation of a literary work, aiming to deeply understand the translation challenges and evaluate the strategies used to convey the tone and content of the original writing into the target language, as well as in the translation itself. The work under study is an excerpt from a broader literary book. More specifically, the main objective of the thesis is both the accurate and faithful rendering of the text in the Greek language and the analysis of the difficulties encountered in translating the stylistic features, thematic elements, and cultural references of the original work. Additionally, the thesis aims to explore the strategies applied by the translators to tackle these challenges, and it investigates how these strategies affect the overall quality of the translation. The analysis combines theoretical exploration with practical application. The literary work from which the translated excerpt and commentary derive is the book titled "Cuando seasamos sueños de papel," the second novel by the nineteen-year-old writer Pol Ibáñez from Barcelona, Spain, belonging to the genre of romantic fiction. The title of the book was rendered in Greek as "Όταν γίνουμε χάρτινα όνειρα". As the title of the thesis suggests, the excerpt selected for translation comes from the first pages of the book. This choice was made to offer readers an introduction to the work, without revealing significant plot elements that unfold later in the book.
