Abstract
In Corfu the domination of the Venetians (1204 -1214) set the basis for the creation of large feudal property, a phenomenon that continued during the period of the D’ Anjou (1266-1386). During the above mentioned periods of time the island showed sufficiency, even a pleonasm in rural products especially in wine and olive oil. During the second domination by the Venetians (1386-1797), emphasis placed on the obligatory growing of olive trees only, so that the financial interests of the metropolis could be served.
The measures that were taken for the obligatory planting of olive trees changed the morphology of the Corfiot landscape and turned the island into a big ‘industrial unit’ of olive oil production. That production started from the taming of wild olive trees or the planting of new ones, continued with exportation to the oil presses (litrouvia) and ended in an extended commercial trading, so that the multiple forms of usage of the olive oil and the continuously increasing needs of the citizens could be satisfied. In the end, the turning to the growing of the olive tree only changed the land relations, as the cultivators, in order to come up to their role, acquired ‘rights’ on the trees or the production. At the same time in the conscience of people, as well as on a practical level, the olive oil was a commodity which ensured their survival, the wealth for some people and which defined the relations between the town and the countryside.
