Abstract
Five times between 788 and 882, the consort of the Byzantine emperor or the heir of the Byzantine throne was chosen in a competition of beautiful women from all over the Empire. In 788, Irene wanted a bride from an obscure and poor family who could not support her son against herself. In 807 Nikephorus was looking a bride who could link his new dynasty to the family of the previous Irene's. In 830 Euphrosyne desired a bride to share her iconolater feelings, such as Theodora or Cassia; she probably either recommended one of them to her iconoclast son or she was assured that all the contestants were iconolater. In 855, Theodora wanted a bride who, unlike Evdokia Ingerina, would not encourage her son to claim herself. In 882 Evdokia wanted a bride who, as a relative, would be faithful to her.
