Abstract
Ιn recent years Information Retrieval, due to the internet and the large number of web sites, aims at the development of effective applications that can handle all this digital material. For this reason, the science of Linguistics and its subclasses can contribute to this cause because the basic type of retrieved files is in text format. In this thesis the main branches of linguistics are presented and it is attempted to explore the relationship between them and the information retrieval through various retrieval applications that have been developed in recent years.
