Abstract
Malaysia is a multicultural country, where many ethnic groups, religions and different traditions meet. Thus, the musical life of the country proves to be extremely rich and interesting, if not unique.
This thesis is a study of traditional Malaysian music. Traditional music is of particular interest because, on one hand, it is a mixture of conflicting practices and has several different aspects, while on the other hand it is sociologically interesting, since it is a musical genre quite unaffected by western influences - at least as it is performed in the villages -, and therefore, authentic and representative of the locals and their culture.
Initially, basic information on country, culture and musical background is provided. Subsequently, we focus on traditional music and its musical instruments. The last chapters deal with the role of music in therapy ceremonies and the influence of the West on traditional Malaysian music.
