Abstract
In this thesis, I will be analyzing and comparing Dante Alighieri's "La Divina Commedia" and Hieronymus Bosch's triptych "The garden of earthly delights". This comparison will lead to a deeper understanding of the belief of the afterlife during the medieval period. The main theme of these works is the "triadic" form of the afterlife, which focuses on the concept of sin. The question that arises is whether each artist was aware of the other's work because the content of their works is quite similar, and whether the specific themes were common at the time. The two artists created their works in almost the same time-period with the only difference being that Bosch chronologically comes later than Dante. They were also part of different cultural societies (Bosch was part of the Dutch society while Dante was born and raised in the Italian society). As such this particular morphology of the afterlife goes beyond the boundaries of one society and extends across the European West. These two works were based on texts of the Catholic Church and gave them form in a unique way. Despite their faithful reference to the church readings, each artist gives them a unique breath, offering the soul of the reader and the viewer respectively, the opportunity to experience the "Word of God" and vice versa, its condemnation. Imagination meets faith and thus artistic eternity is created.
