Abstract
Ιn this research I studied the way in which trumpeter Wynton Marsalis contributed to the consolidate of jazz as cultural heritage of USA. In the competitive and globalized environment of music industry, he restored to the forefront the tradition of classical jazz music and highlighted its historic music for the cultural tradition of USA. The Marsalis’ cultural intervention took place through his work as a performer, educator, composer, CEO, artistic director and big band leader. Specifically, as a performer he managed through his high level of technique and his personality to give glamour and to bring back to the forefront the tradition of classical jazz music through the movement of neoclassicism. Through his success to the commercial discography as well as his synthetic and orchestrating ability he managed to do jazz more commercial and to attract more people. He also created a new repertoire which was trust heritage for the next generations of jazz musicians. Finally, through his thirty-year-old and more offer to the Jazz At Lincoln Center (JALC) organization, Marsalis contributed decisively to the maintenance of the inheritance of classical jazz and the big band. This happened through the study, the specialization and the revival of classic repertoire of jazz with reperformances, adaptations and performances of new repertoire. This work was carried out by JALC's big band which is named Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO). He also contributed through educational programs, tours, seminars and concerts with which communicates the cultural idiom of classical jazz to the educational structures of USA and abroad.
