Abstract
This thesis was carried out in the framework of the Postgraduate Studies Programme entitled: "Science of Translation" of the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpretation of the School of Humanities of the Ionian University. The subject of the project is the creation of audio subtitles and their translation from English to Greek for the American production documentary, which was broadcasted by Frontline via PBS, entitled "Prison State".
The introduction includes a detailed description of the subject of this thesis and the presentation of information about the documentary and the reasons that led me to this particular choice.
The first part lists the subtitles as they were created by hearing for the film. The second part approaches audiovisual translation as a particular type of translation, which requires a specialised methodology for reproducing meanings with time and space constraints, while the third part presents and analyses the challenges that emerged during this process and the strategies that were used to manage them. This is followed by the conclusions in the form of an epilogue. Finally, a glossary annex is provided with the legal terms encountered and their interpretations.
