Abstract
The band created in the context of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu, which is also known as the "Old Philharmonic", it was founded on September 12, 1840 and is the oldest music education organization in Greece. The original aim of the founders was to create a full music academy, similar to those that existed in neighboring Italy. In this way it was sought to address a problem that had existed for a long time, the lack of a full music school that would offer music education to the residents of Corfu, regardless of their social class, age, gender and general education.
This paper will focus on the theoretical part by examining the history of symphonic music in the Ionian Islands and especially in Corfu, investigating the course of classical music in Greece during the 19th century. Subsequently, the historical context of the foundation of the band of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu and its course up to the 21st century will be explored. Next, the research part will focus on the cultivation of the idea of volunteerism and socialization through the schools that develop among the members, the clothing of the participants in the band, will be analyzed, as well as the activity that characterizes in the local community in the form of public Easter religious ceremonies, intended to preserve and strengthen a long-standing tradition.
Within this context, the band of the Philharmonic aims to ensure musical education, promoting the provision of opportunities to talented students through scholarships, contributing to the promotion of the island's music and cultural heritage.
