Abstract
The main goal of the essay is through the archival and historical approach, examination, and
documentation of the material, to promote and raise appreciation of the audio archive of the Greek Service of the BBC. A digital copy of the archive is kept in the Library of Hellenic Parliament.
Through the five chapters of the current study, there is an attempt to record in a distinct and
comprehensible way all the structural elements which characterize and complete the specific archive.
So in the first chapter, as we are focusing on the very nature of the archive as a radio archive, we are looking back in time and sharing a brief historical account of radio, as the most important and influential mass media of the 20th century.
Next chapter examines the special path of audiovisual archives in Greece and the world, as well as the position and the importance they have established in the modern world. The chapter also recognises further, both the potential and the challenges that this kind of archives bring with them.
The third chapter is dedicated to the Greek Service of BBC. By writing down the history of the Greek Section, we want to emphasize on the unique existence of the archive material and its significant historical, social, political and cultural value. These elements support the effort to enrich our established view about post war Greece. In the second part of the chapter we have a brief presentation of the archive.
The following chapter aims to put forward in a direct, easily understandable but at the same
time analytical way, the procedure of documentation of the approximately 100 sound documents that were used especially for the needs of this study. The documentation followed the MARC 21 standard and took place in the Koha ILS environment.
The content of these documents is our main point of interest in the fifth and final chapter of the thesis. This chapter aspires to motivate, to set an example if you like, on how sound archives today (like the one we examine here) can contribute and supplement the historical and scientific research.
