Abstract
The goal of this dissertation is the study of water use in Greece as well as in the EU, in order to properly manage it. In the first chapter, I analyze the irrigated and irrigable areas of Europe; Greece and Denmark from 1995-2016 have reductions while the Netherlands and Italy increases. Next, I explain about water supply and irrigation in Greece. The use of water in Greece is mainly agricultural with a big distance from the other uses, with second the domestic, and finally the industrial and the energy uses. Climate is the main factor determining water consumption in agriculture, as well as irrigation technology. The question arises as to whether water economy is important. In the fourth chapter I analyze the irrigation systems, such as underground, drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation and surface irrigation. Surface irrigation is less widespread with its main advantages being low cost of capital and energy as well as its easy management. Disadvantage is the labor intensity. Some most common types of irrigation systems are the drip irrigation, the sprinkler irrigation, the center pivot irrigation, with the most widespread to be the drip irrigation. Finally, I analyze the effects of climate change on the irrigation of the agro-ecosystem and the need to adapt it. Rapid climate change will affect agricultural productivity.
