Abstract
In this thesis the question was raised whether music education can enhance the social skills
of special education students, who attend a General Elementary School within the
framework of parallel support. The objective was to investigate how music activities can
be used in music education lessons to enhance the socialization of non-typical pupils
within the framework of parallel support. Eleven music education lessons inspired by the
principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) were designed and were applied at a
General Elementary School in the town of Corfu, with the participation of two students,
aged 9 and 10 years. The implementation of the lessons took place within the school unit
and involved a parallel support teacher from the school. The results of the implementation
showed that music education can serve as a supplementary tool to encourage atypically
developing children in learning and in the development of social skills, such as
collaboration, communication, and interaction within and outside the group. In advance
planning of teaching plans proved to be a highly effective tool for enhancing the learning
process, but also a helpful tool for a new teacher. Of course, it was observed that in
advance planning did not fully cover the unexpected difficulties that arose in the
classroom, because sometimes health issues and children's reactions were not sufficiently
predictable. For this reason, it is recommended that teachers be flexible and proactive to be
able to cover such situations.
