Abstract
This dissertation was written based on the Dissertation Regulation of the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University. It concerns the translation and annotation of a legal text from English to the Greek language, which has not been officially translated. The source-text is an excerpt from the Criminal Code of Canada entitled "Crimes Against the Person and Reputation".
The source-text is a legal text and the target-text is intended to be a translated version of the original. Any translation task with a legal content must be treated as a legal matter and not as an ordinary translation. Especially for the translation of legal texts, it should first be decided whether the target-text will constitute a translated version of the original or whether it will fulfill the same purpose as that of the original and have the same legal value (as for example in the case of Regulations and Directives of the European Union. When it is required consultants (legal consultants, lawyers etc.), specialized in the field that concerns the specific translation task, should be engaged. In this case, since translation as a targeted activity has teleological character, the purpose of the target-text is to convey the meaning of the original text as carefully and clearly as possible and to be a translated version of the specific excerpt of the Canadian Criminal Code.
