Abstract
This thesis focuses on audiovisual translation, specifically on the process of creating
and translating subtitles in the Greek language for the show “Brussels, my love. What
is the EU Green Industrial Plan and when will platform works get any rights?”. The
study includes a commentary of the technical characteristics and the translation
difficulties encountered during the subtitling process. The main objective of this
research is to assess the level of difficulty concerning the technical and linguistic
aspects of a political talk-show, as well as the efficacy of conveying the meaning of
the source text in Greek while adhering to the constraints of subtitling.
The main findings of the thesis indicate that audiovisual translation is a complex
process, demanding not only translation skills and technical knowledge but also
consistency, coherence, and critical thinking to tackle various challenges effectively.
The work of a subtitler becomes particularly arduous when dealing with videos
presenting difficulties in timing (continuous dialogues, short pauses), technical
characteristics (such as characters per second and reading speed), or translation
aspects (idioms, terminology, slang, wordplays, and humor). In the case of subtitling
a political talk-show, this research shows that challenges arise in all three of the
aforementioned areas. The continuous flow of dialogues presents timing difficulties,
while spatial and temporal constraints demand careful message conveyance.
Additionally, translating certain terms requires special attention in the context of
discussing crucial political issues.
