Abstract
The thesis “Proposed methodology for the development of unconventional characters in audiovisual fiction: the case of non-binary gender identities” researches the way non-binary gender stands culturally and in the audio-visual field. The study attempts to understand the subject in a multilevel way, with the purpose of concept designing a non-binary fictional character. Cultures with genders outside the binary system in their cultures are approached. Then, non-binary and trans rights worldwide are studied. News media material of interviews with non-binary people is examined and original interviews are conducted, in order to understand different individual’s views about their gender. An assessment on audiovisual works that include non-binary characters is done, based on the accuracy the representation is. Finally, the analysis and designing of a specific non-binary fictional protagonist is done, for the hypothetical adaptation of the literary work I wish you all the best from the author Mason Deaver in an audiovisual work.
