Abstract
For the past few decades, a continuously increasing number of people are starting to coexist and interact with each other. This is primarily a result of globalisation, migratory flows as well as rapid technological development that is causing people to concentrate in the cities. Potential opportunities for cooperation among people are therefore arising which can affect the societies in several different ways, both politically and socially. Effects of these collaborations are evident through the fields of arts and especially the one of music. In recent decades there has been intense migration from Africa to Greece. The cultural evolvement of Greek societies as well as the contemporary music development of the place do suggest a real contribution and influence of the African music traditions in Greece. The fact that the music emerging from migrant African communities is also remarkably important within the global music industry, inspired and encouraged me to study this musical culture and how its influence transfers and is portrayed within the frameworks of the Greek society. This paper deals with how West African musical culture has made its first appearance in the Greek music community and how it has become a part of it. The research was conducted in Athens through interviews with Greek and African musicians involved in the genre.
