Abstract
The subject of this thesis is the study of the management of cultural heritage at a
regional level, focusing on the museums and archaeological sites of Messinia
Prefecture. The aim of the study is to study, promote as well as make proposals for
better management of cultural heritage. The thesis also aims to emphasize how
important it is to integrate cultural heritage into people's modern life as a means of
learning the rich history of Messinia Prefecture.
The thesis is composed of three chapters, each of which contains a wealth of
information. In the first chapter, the concepts of culture and cultural heritage are
clarified so that the concept of cultural heritage can then be understood. In addition,
reference is made to the legal framework for the protection of cultural heritage at
international and national level and to the competent protection bodies, and to the
concept of communication, emphasizing its inseparable link with the concept of
culture. Reference to digital technology and its media could not be omitted, enhancing
cultural management, promotion, and public attraction.
In the second chapter, the museums of Messinia prefecture are presented in a detailed
way. Six museums were selected, the most important and best-known museums,
which contribute to the management and promotion of the cultural wealth of the
place, occupying a very long period. For each of the museums, a detailed account is
given of their history, their exhibition space, their communication policy and whether
they have the capacity for digital technology.
The third and final chapter of the thesis is dedicated to the archaeological sites of the
prefecture of Messinia. The archaeological sites presented are five and for each one a
reference is made to its history, the monuments it has, its communication policy and
whether digital technology is applied.
At the end, proposals for the management of museums and archaeological sites are
proposed and the conclusions are presented.
