Abstract
The access to the World Wide Web is a basic condition for the survival of a human being in the information age. However, despite the technological progress in different areas of everyday life, an equal access to the Web for people with vision problems is still considered a utopia. The complex structure of websites, combined with the difficult handling of tools such as the screen reader, both distance users who have low or non-existent visual performance from the exploitation of the website’s content. In parallel, voice assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa enable interaction with the Web entirely through the usage of voice, adding a new form of interaction to the field of human-computer communication, which can be adopted entirely by a person with vision problems. The present dissertation studies the prospect of integrating voice recognition and synthesis technologies that are previously used by a voice assistant, in web applications. For the determination of the specific position, a proof of concept e-shop which allows full voice navigation was created. Without the need for hardware such as the keyboard and the mouse, the voice is the mean for the exploitation of the Web’s possibilities in an efficient and flexible way by people who face vision problems.
