Abstract
The interest of the music education community in recent decades, has focused on the introduction of informal forms of music learning in education. Learning traditional music aurally, that is, as an aural tradition, mainly through observation and imitation, has been the milestone of the present research, which attempts to highlight the aural dimension of traditional music.
This is attempted by implementing an informal, learning-based approach and strategies in the individual lessons of traditional instruments, by having the body and the voice guide the playing of the instrument. The research focused on the issues of “song-body percussion-instrument” and targeted at having the music school students approach a repertoire of mixed measures of traditional music without reading music notation, mainly through active participation.
Implementing the movement through body percussion as the primary approach to support and comprehend the rhythm, as well as the voice to help understand the melodic line, the students who took part in the actiοn approached a repertoire entirely by ear for the first time. Some of the benefits that the students gained were that they were given the tools to "unlock" a wide repertoire of music that they would be happy to play or even sing, so that they could learn without the supervision of a teacher, inside and outside the classroom.
