Abstract
The challenges facing the publishing industry in recent years have been many. Some of them, such as the expansion of retail chains, the emergence of literary agents and the expansion of conglomerates, have changed the structure and operation of publishing houses. The domestic publishing industry was affected by these to some extent, but for it the biggest challenge proved to be the economic crisis that hit our country in recent years. For almost a decade, the industry in general and the publishing industry in particular faced an economic recession, from which publishers seem to have emerged victorious. And just as the economic crisis was coming to an end and book production began to show an upward trend, the health crisis broke out. The virus unknown to all, dubbed Covid-19, came along and with it brought new facts. Its emergence and the ignorance of how to deal with it shook the scientific community, society and of course the economy. The effects of the health crisis have certainly not yet been seen, but the first signs are there. The economy in particular seems to have been hit hard, as the measures taken by governments around the world have brought a freeze on the economy for a long period of time. The publishing industry as part of the economy has been faced with this new and particular challenge. This paper is an attempt to document the early effects of the Covid-19 crisis on the publishing industry, focusing on the major publishing houses in our country. For this reason, it was necessary to look at the structure and functioning of the publishing houses. Subsequently, it was necessary to refer to the three major changes that took place in the publishing industry and how they transformed it, thus seeing how volatile it is to change. Next, we studied the recent challenge that the global and domestic publishing industry has had to face due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
