Abstract
According to the literature, lullabies are an integral part of the infants' sleep ritual and routine. The main purpose of lullabies is to reassure the infant to fall asleep. However, its importance and benefits are not limited to this and are not only for the infant, but also for the mother, who is often the one who lullabies her child. Lullabying is reassuring for both and builds a bridge of communication between the mother-infant binary relationship. In our country there have been several studies on lullabies in the field of folklore. In the present research, the ways of performance, the functions of lullaby and the experiences it may generate in us are studied. The research is based on semi-structured interviews with 17 mothers, some who have infants and are currently lullabies and some who now have older children and were lulled to sleep as infants. The former mothers' experience of the lulling process in the present is explored, while the latter mothers' recollection of their experience of their children's infancy and their possible conclusions from it. The significance of lullabies for the mothers and for the child according to the mother's perspective is also studied. Particular emphasis is placed on the musical characteristics of the lullaby as reported by the mothers, but also on the lullaby choices and the children's reactions to them. In addition, lullabies also act as a catalyst for the generation of feelings and thoughts in general about motherhood and their relationship with their child. At the same time, the contribution and influence of other family members play a role in lullabies.
