Abstract
Traditional music is one of the cornerstones of the cultural identity of a country and as an oral tradition it is preserved and transmitted orally from generation to generation. The purpose of the present study is to restore the oral identity of traditional music within the music curriculum through the implementation of a model based on methods and strategies of informal learning. The main objective is to "re-introduce" traditional music to students of a Primary School in Cyprus through empirical co-operative engagement in the learning process. The teaching approach was based on current pedagogical methods and on a student-centered learning environment where the teacher’s role is limited to that of a mentor. Lucy Green’s (2008) model of informal learning was applied to the current study. The focus was on understanding the music learning processes followed by the student participants. Through peer directed learning, the participants were able to work in groups and self-learn and perform Cypriot traditional songs by ear. Using Stake’s (1967) two - countenances evaluation model, as a framework for assessing the effectiveness of implementation, the researcher described, interpreted and evaluated the process and the outcomes of the model. The results of the study showed that students obtained and developed important elements and learning skills such as collaboration, collectivity, transferring of knowledge and experience, admission and acceptance of error, management of stress, sense of goal achievement, fostering a positive attitude towards music and discovery of music skills. In conclusion, the proposed model can be a valuable asset to primary education music educators as it provides numerous benefits and learning outcomes to the students when applied properly to the learning environment.
