Abstract
Information disorders and fake news are a phenomenon of global concern and worry for the function of the public sphere, the credibility of the media and the quality of democracy. Given the ever-increasing digitalization of citizens' daily lives, the universal penetration of social media into the informational landscape, the personalized content and developments in news and journalism industry with many journalistic organizations facing significant problems in an ever-changing environment, the issue is becoming increasingly complex.
It is therefore a common assumption among researchers around the world that a new system of assurances is needed (Lazer et al., 2018) in order to tackle the phenomenon and enhance the credibility of the media and the public sphere in general.
This PhD thesis aims to investigate and reveal where and in what ways and characteristics the phenomenon occurs in the Greek public sphere, to identify the sources where it originates and to investigate the ways and methods that can be used in order to combat and reduce it. Furthermore, it aims to propose new communication models and fact-checking platforms based on strategies that enhance citizen participation such as crowdsourcing and the utilization of new technologies such as artificial intelligence that can make a decisive contribution to combating the phenomenon.
