Abstract
The present study examines the methods and strategies employed in the translation of English film titles into Greek, and the relationship between the employment of certain translation strategies and the film genre as well as the decade during which each film was produced. Cinema is one of the most popular and influential media of mass entertainment, and film titles contribute to a film’s commercial success. The translation of film titles as a separate area of research has so far not received due attention. Through the analysis of a corpus of 125 films produced and distributed between 1925 and 2005 as well as the conduction of interviews with people working in the field of cinema, this study showed that word-for-word, free translation and transliteration were the most prevalent translation methods across the sample of titles. The present study showed trends regarding the distribution of translation methods across six film genres based on the characteristic feature of each genre. Changes in the pattern of distribution of translation strategies over decades were also observed, which can be correlated to changes that took place during specific time periods in the broader historic, social and cultural context of the United States and which affected the film industry as well.
