Abstract
The present work is an approach and exploration of the course of the realistic current in opera. Through authoritative sources, printed and electronic, ideas and data on the subject are captured. Initially, the introduction defines what Realism means and then refers to the influences of the realism movement on the visual arts, literature, theater and music. Reference is made to the particular characteristics of this aesthetic current in relation to the political and social developments of the time. Mention is made of the magnitude of the influence of Realism on other similar movements such as Naturalism in the arts, which influenced the realist movement to reach its final form. The current of Realism refers mainly to the era of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the 20th. In the following research, there are also earlier indications of artistic reserves with realistic touches. The following chapters discuss the evolution of opera from the end of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century in Europe. The focus is mainly on three realistic movements of the following period. More specifically, in the first chapter there is a reference to the National Schools in Europe with a focus on the National School in Russia. Features of realism are analyzed in operas of their representatives. The second chapter aims to highlight elements of Verismo, a realistic current in Italy. The third chapter focuses on the influence of the Socialist realist movement on twentieth-century Russia and Germany and on opera of that time. In relation to the last two movements, an analysis is made of the ways in which realism can be perceived in their representative works. Finally, a series of conclusions followed, which emerged after thorough research and systematic study.
