Abstract
The present work aims to explore the main context of integration and teaching
of music in Greek schools from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th
century. The period is chosen for its critical importance in the founding of the
Greek nation, but its extent is partly controlled by the material available for
analysis. Initially, the historical and social context of the period is examined, in
order to identify the main socio-political components in the establishment of
music teaching. Then the historical context of the educational situation in Greece
and specifically music education in schools is presented. The study is completed
through the analysis of four indicative collections of school songs. Attempts are
made to deconstruct the taught material into fundamental semantic categories,
which reflect the main socio-political perceptions that prevail during the
examined period. It is concluded that the lesson of music is included right from
the start in the axes of shaping the morals and cultivating a national identity in
students, but it does not remain static. On the one hand, there is a mixture of
Eastern and Western musical standards, which are formalized to some extent
under the influence of the Demoticist movement. On the other hand, during the
transition to the bourgeois society of post-Ottoman Greece, music teaching
follows the broader educational content and turns towards more practical
directions, emphasizing the moral and virtue-building content, without ever
sacrificing the religious and patriotic element.
