Abstract
The twenty-first century could be described as the technological age as new data show an increase in the use of computers, the internet and consequently social networks. The new era of Web 2.0 has come (Participatory Internet), in which both the internet and social media are paramount. The tourism industry could not be unaffected by this trend, as a result of which it has fully embraced the new developments. The present work attempts, through a literature review, as well as based on a research questionnaire, to capture the picture of the turn observed by tourism companies towards the use of social media, in order to promote a tourist destination. To determine how closely the tourism industry is connected to social media. Through the research, an image is created of how consumers have accepted the use of social media by the tourism industry, but also how the choice of a travel destination is shaped through them, by the influence of other users' comments. The great advantage of social media is the connection between them, so that with the direct use of one, there is an indirect simultaneous connection with more, which results in the rapid spread of information to a wider audience worldwide, removing borders and restrictions. There is also a reference on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic (also known as the coronavirus pandemic) on the tourism industry and how they will be overcome in the future.
