Abstract
In recent years there is a growing awareness about the changes that digital media and cultural changes have brought in children’s musical experiences and musical culture. Children express musical behaviors in different settings in a variety of ways.In Kindergartens, through free play, children have opportunities to display musical behaviors and in this way to express thoughts, ideas and feelings. This study aimed to investigate the ways in which students express their musical behaviors during free play and transitional periods and how they interact with each other through musical behaviors. This is a qualitative research that took place in a kindergarten classroom in a private school in a Greek island. Through observation, data were collected and analysed. Findings that emerged led to the analysis of the role and the processes of spontaneous musical behaviors in the school environment, and highlight the importance for children to interact with their classmates through musical behaviors.
