Abstract
The concept of hyperreality and the phenomenon of the precession of the simulacra has been discussed by postmodernist scholars. However, this has not been done to the same extent, as far as the field of study of acoustic reality is concerned. With this research, we wanted to examine the above phenomena in the context of sound studies and sound art. As a consequence the discussion shifted to the concept of sonic hyperreality and the recognition and analysis of the corresponding aural simulacra. With the hypothesis that the audio signal can be read as a signifier-signified construction, we carried out a reduction of the successive orders of the image, as defined by J. Baudrillard, to the corresponding orders of the heard. Thus emerged the sacramental order, the order of maleficence, the order of sorcery and that of pure aural simulacra. The sacramental order is about aural simulacra, which are an exact copy of a profound acoustic reality. Simulacra of the order of maleficence distort an abstract acoustic reality. In the order of sorcery, the simulacrum hides the absence of an acoustic reality, while pure aural simulacra have no relation to any acoustic reality whatsoever. Utilizing phonography and the amalgamation of realities, acoustic biomimetics and autopoietic modes of creation, the auralizing of things out of nothing and the creative use of the field of audio archaeology, the resulting artworks highlighted the special characteristics of each class of aural simulacra, their relationship to acoustic reality and the catalytic role of media and perception in the ontological transformation of the audio signal.
