Abstract
The subject of this paper is the museographic design of an exhibition in the disciplinary cells of radius A' of the Corfu prison complex. Corfu prison was built during the period of the British Protectorate of Corfu and is known for its harsh conditions. Although its design was based on progressive social theories of the time about imprisonment, the practice that was followed throughout time and especially during the politically turbulent periods of Greece’s history, stigmatized the site in the collective memory. The prison complex is studied in relation to the development of the city of Corfu and the pressures it creates, as it is in operation. The aim of the exhibition is to present the history of the building, people’s stories and the wider political context that dictated the operation and character of the prison. It is an undertaking of dealing with a difficult built heritage site, which aspires to be a forerunner for the reuse of the entire complex for the creation a place of memory and culture.
