Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyse the tours of the early-Renaissance and early modern travellers of the antiquities of Crete during the period of the Cretan Renaissance, and Athens during the Enlightenment, as manifested in Greek territory. This thematic was inspired by the field of study of representation of landscapes of antiquity by travellers that offers a journey into the past through images. The main question that was posed and led to this study and investigation is the search for a possible connection between the Cretan Renaissance and the Greek Enlightenment, in the context of the traveller's tours and the depiction of antiquities, and how it is justified if indeed such a connection exists. Additionally, it examines the travellers' aspirations for their journeys both in Crete and Athens during two different time periods, from the 15th to the 17th century and from the 18th to the 19th century respectively. Through this dissertation, an understanding of the sociocultural and historical context of the Renaissance period and the Enlightenment is achieved, how they shaped the perception of antiquity by the travellers and how they portrayed it through drawings and photographs. Secondary sources, textbooks and electronic resources were used to carry out the work and achieve the mentioned objectives.
