Abstract
The thesis concerning the laity in Palladius' Laussaic History focuses on the study of their role and position in this work, which records the experiences of Christian ascetics and monks of the 4th century. Palladius, bishop and author, describes the lives of ascetics in Egypt and the East, while at the same time referring to their relationship with the laity.
Through the analysis of the work, it is found that the term "lay" is used to describe believers who are neither clergy nor monks. Nevertheless, the laity play an important role in the Christian community, supporting the monks, either financially or morally, while some try to imitate their way of life. The Lusatian History often presents them as pious people who display virtues, but without embracing the monastic life.
An important element of the study is the examination of the relationship between lay people and monks. Despite their different paths, the laity appear to actively participate in religious life and play a decisive role in the development and support of the Christian community. At the same time, the moral and spiritual value of the laity is demonstrated, who, according to Palladius, can live a life of virtue, even if they do not choose the monastic path.
Summarizing, the thesis highlights the importance of the laity in the early Christian community and how Lausaian History presents them as active participants in the religious life of the time.
