Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increasing doubt among citizens and political parties about the EU and its institutions (Euroscepticism). Applying the methodological framework of Multimodal Discourse Analysis and making use of the methodological tools of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Political Discourse Analysis (PDA), as well as the Grammar of Visual Design model, we attempt a qualitative analysis of 20 political posters, 5 for each of the following political spaces: Greece, the United Kingdom, Germany and Switzerland; the political posters were produced by left and right-wing parties in these countries during critical socio-political and economic events (the European financial crisis, Grexit, Brexit, migration flows in Europe). Τhe main aim of this dissertation is to highlight the linguistic and extra-linguistic characteristics, explicit and implicit, as inferred from posters of right and left-wing parties in the European space. On a second level, an attempt is made to classify the posters to be examined within the already existing categorisations of Euroscepticism, while attempting to highlight the scope and aspects of this phenomenon.
