Abstract
This thesis is submitted in the context of the completion of the undergraduate program in Translation at the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation, and Interpreting at the Ionian University. The main focus of the thesis is the field of Audiovisual Translation (AVT), with the application of the method of intralingual subtitling. The audiovisual material under study consists of part of the videotaped trial of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, specifically the testimony of Tracy Edwards, the sole surviving victim, while on the witness stand. The aim of this project is to create a subtitled version of the English template and translate into Greek the video recording of this part of the trial, titled "WI v. Jeffrey Dahmer (1992): Victim Tracy Edwards Testifies". The thesis begins with a brief presentation of the theoretical framework of subtitling as a type of audiovisual translation and includes a short introduction to the subject of the video. It also provides information on the guidelines followed and the software programs used in the project. Following this, the main challenges encountered during the creation of the subtitle template and its translation are presented, along with the strategies employed to address these issues. Examples and tables are provided where necessary to illustrate these solutions. The choice of this topic was motivated by personal interest and involvement in subtitling, the future prospects of the subtitling profession in the labor market, and the limited number of academic papers on subtitling at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.
