Abstract
The aim of this research is to examine the degree to which the Hellenic Coast Guard
officials are interculturally sensitive and the degree to which their sensitivity is
affected by demographic variables such as gender, age, level of education,
international travels etc. Another area of interest is their general stance which will
help us understand their overall beliefs on intercultural communication. To achieve
this goal, a quantitative survey was conducted with a sample of one hundred and three active Hellenic Coast Guard officials who serve in various positions throughoutGreece, using the snowball sampling method. The main research tool used was the ISS of Chen and Starosta (2000). Taking the results of the research into account, we concluded that the Hellenic Coast Guard officials scored high in intercultural sensitivity. The variables of gender, position of responsibility and public interactions were distinguished as statistically significant depending either on respect shown in intercultural interactions or on attention paid to the interaction or on their participation respectively. Overall, Hellenic Coast Guard officials are interculturally
competent thanks to their personal experiences and the cognitive and emotional aspects of their personality, guided by their main concern to communicate effectively. Were these personal intercultural competences structurally supported by corresponding social actions, then the Service as a whole and the society in general would evolve interculturally as wished. The findings of this dissertation could be used comparatively in a study with other branches of the armed forces, and thus add to our knowledge on intercultural interactions.
