Abstract
This thesis is centered around the process of the interlingual subtitling of the web documentary
titled "Who were the radium girls?". Beginning in the early 1920s, the documentary in question
recounts the story of numerous women who found themselves at the center of one of the darkest
points in American history, that would later end up radically changing the nation’s trajectory
regarding both the feminist movement as well as labor rights. This documentary was chosen not
only because of the historical impact of its core subject, but also based on its content itself,
which allowed for numerous subtitling challenges, such as timing and editing issues, as well as
translation difficulties stemming from the structure, cultural references and the use of medical
and legal terminology within the text to be thoroughly analyzed. The aim of this paper is to
provide a well-rounded description of the process and the methods that were used for the
subtitling of this video, when intended to be viewed by a Greek target audience which is most
likely not very familiar with this subject matter.
