Abstract
The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is growing rapidly in the healthcare industry. The underlying cornerstone of IoMT are Personal Area Networks (PANs), with Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) that fall under PANs gaining ground. More specifically, WBANs consist of devices that may be implanted inside the body, may be surface-mounted on the body in a fixed position, or may be in clothes or in various bags. Thus, this heterogeneous set of devices that produce different kinds of medical data, can generate different types of traffic, deeming priority between them as crucial. For example, electrocardiograms are deemed to have more important information than body temperature to indicate the health status of a person, hence the electrocardiograms signal need to have higher priority than the temperature. Both for the performance of the network, and for the decisions that will be made for the health of the individual, the transmission and therefore the collection of information must be done in real time and be subject to some time constraints. Therefore and taking into account the above, the study of scheduling issues for the transmission of information is considered necessary and particularly important in such environments and is the focus of this Thesis.
