Abstract
The aim of this M.A. thesis is to measure the Intercultural Sensitivity of primary
education teachers. Although a variety of research has been conducted focusing on
intercultural competence of teachers, only a few of them focus on intercultural
sensitivity. Ιn order to achieve the objective of the thesis, a quantitative survey was
carried out, in which 80 teachers participated. The tool of the survey was the
Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) of Chen and Starosta (2000). According to the
results of the survey, the primary school teachers showed high level of Intercultural
Sensitivity since they scored high on the 5 sub-scales of the questionnaire. With regard
to whether or not there is a difference in the level of Intercultural Sensitivity among
teachers of different gender, age, years of experience or training and other demographic
characteristics, a statistically significant difference was found among teachers who hold
a master's degree and those who do not. Also, teachers who have lived or studied abroad
achieved a high level of Intercultural Sensitivity. Furthermore, through the research it
is confirmed that the teachers feel cross-culturally competent to meet the needs of
culturally diverse students. However, they believe that their basic education does not
sufficiently respond to issues of intercultural education, which according to them, it is
the reason why, a coordinated training by the Ministry of Education on issues of
interculturalism is essential. In conclusion, the teachers who took part in the survey
accept and they are familiar with cultural diversity, keep an open mind and recognize
that all cultures are equal.
