Abstract
In this dissertation we present an analysis of the narrative organization of radio art works, that is, the way meaning is created by the narrative functionality of the various sonic elements that structure radio art works. In this context, narrativity and narrative organization is meant in a broader sense than that of literary narrative. The objectives of this work is the development of a new system of radio art analysis, in theory and practice, within sound art, based on models from the theory of electroacoustic music, semiotics and music psychology.
This work is organized in three parts: history, theory and applications. In the history part, historical and theoretical issues of radio art are examined, with a geographical and chronological approach and with an intention towards a theoretical systematization of the historical corpus of radio works.
In the theory part, a system of analysis of the radio works narrative organization is developed, which is based on a series of narrative-semantic parameters. These parameters are examined and presented separately and concern: the dimensions of narrative affordance, the hierarchical time scales, the semantic levels, the types of syntactical organization, the types of linearity, the types of multiplicity and the types of textural complexity.
In the applications part, the analysis system is implemented to the analysis of 5 characteristic radio works as case studies. All the parameters, previously presented in detail, are combined here as the complete analytical system in action. The same system is further used as an organizational tool in designing and producing an innovative experimental radio program flow considering radio works as its structural elements.
The development of this analytical system of the narrative organization of radio art contributes to the study and classification of radio works and opens a new field of applications in many creative directions regarding perceptual strategies in understanding audio art works in general.
