Abstract
Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros (1795‒1872) was the first Greek who systematically taught Western music theory. His harmonic theory reveals a teacher strongly influenced by Italian musical education, who combined classical southern Italian methods (mainly partimento) with modern northern Italian ones (based on Rameau). The effectiveness, for which his method had been praised, is probably due to this combinatory, theoretical-practical approach. The Belgian theorist Momigny emerges as his most important influence regarding the formation of his theoretical system.The central purpose of this work is the gathering of the elements that constitute Mantzaros’ harmonic theory, their citation, and relevant commentary. These elements have been drawn mainly from primary sources, i.e. his surviving teaching manuals related to harmony, either directly or indirectly. In the commentary on the sources an attempt is made to explain in detail the elements that comprise Mantzaros’ theory. Many of its individual elements are also compared with corresponding elements found in other theorists, with the aim of (a) identifying possible sources of Mantzaros’ theory, and (b) placing his theory in the context of its time. Regarding the primary evidence, two important sources are examined in detail: (a) a large table of 116 musical examples of chord sequences, and (b) the Studio pratico dell' Armonia. As for the rest of the primary sources in which we find elements of Mantzaros' harmonic theory, important passages from them are cited. Finally, the Appendix contains the theoretical text of Studio pratico dell' Armonia, both in the Italian original and in a Greek translation.
