Abstract
In the beginning, the study shows that the hybrid warfare concept is not totally framed and that key debates among scholars are whether it is a new concept or a concept at all. It also explains that the Russian notion of new generation warfare, or “Gerasimov Doctrine”, is based upon minimal use of military means and covertness and is not identical to the Western hybrid warfare concept.
Next, it reflects the Russian perception about its near abroad and suggests that the political theory and actions of Russia pursue its national expansion over its neighbours, the establishment of a sphere of influence, and the restoration of its power in Eurasia.
Following, it stresses that the main causes for Russia’s intervention were its will for expansion, the NATO and EU enlargement, its inherent geopolitical insecurity, and the protection of Russians living abroad. According to the analysis, all commonly accepted hybrid elements were fully applied under the specific settings of the Crimean case.
Finally, the study displays that after the intervention Putin’s domestic power became more consolidated, while Russia’s international image and credibility were notably beaten. NATO revamped its cooperation with the EU on the European security and launched new initiatives, whereas most countries officially condemned the Russian destabilising acts.
The study endorses the prevailing arguments of most of the Western scholars about the hybrid nature of the Crimean case and reveals the Russian antagonistic behaviour in its near abroad and its determination to increase its sphere of influence.
