Abstract
In this study an attempt was made to examine the translation of ichthyology terms in the European Union (EU) legislation and jurisprudence. In particular, a corpus composed of 7 EU Regulations was used to verify whether the names of 115 fish were translated in Greek in the same way in these EU Regulations. Additionally, the implemented translation strategies for these terms were examined. The results showed no homogeneity in the use of attributions, as only 42% of the terms examined used consistently the same attribution, while there were cases of double, triple and even quadruple attributions. For the translation strategy used, the results of the study showed that literal equivalents was the most widely used strategy compared to loan translations (calques) and direct borrowing, but no conclusions could be drawn due to the limited number of terms that were categorized.
