Abstract
Ioannis Kapodistrias (1776-1831) was a Greek politician, diplomat and the first governor of modern Greece. He was born in Corfu and studied medicine and political science. He served as a diplomat in Russia and gained considerable experience in foreign policy.
After the Revolution of 1821, Kapodistrias was elected governor of Greece in 1827 and undertook the task of rebuilding the country. He tried to create a modern state, promoting education, health care and infrastructure. However, his political approach and reforms met resistance from political factions and local actors. His government was characterized by the fight against anarchy and the attempt to unify the country, but also by conflicts with political opponents. Finally, in 1831, he was assassinated in Patras, which marked the end of the first governmental period in Greece. Kapodistrias is considered one of the most important historical figures of the country, with a legacy that influences Greek politics and society to this day.
