Abstract
This thesis addresses the way in which the Greek museums interact with the Modern Greek society. Culture is important worldwide, therefore museums, as vectors of culture, should have piecemeal or integral part in the initiatives of a national planning. In this thesis, we will examine not only the social but also the educational role of the museums, the theoretical approaches, and the museum experience. Social integration, inclusion and exclusion are key concepts that will be studied and mentioned. Within the framework of these key concepts, we will also analyze the factors that reinforce them. Further into the subject, we will study the accession practices of the Greek museums through educational programs and technology available to this day. In order all of the above to be fully comprehended we will specifically examine Corfu’s museums and their strategies of approaching the local visitor, as well as focus on the overall relation between museums and the local society. Finally, through a research (questionnaire), the question, whether the public’s demands for the museums coincide with the regularity of visits at the museums or not, will be posed and attempted to be answered.
