Abstract
Travel writing as a textual genre provides valuable insights into the social and geopolitical context of the historical periods to which it refers. It intertwines the travel writer’s experience with the cultural narratives of their destination and the reader's own cultural framework. Blending the narrator’s individual identity with the collective identity of the audience (Quaireau 2022: 3), it creates a fertile ground for examining certain ideological issues that have persistently preoccupied Western thought. In the same way that language is not innocent (Fragoudaki 1987: 23) and never neutral, travel writing, as a product of subjective interpretation of otherness (Said 1978: 332) should be evaluated not merely as an account of the travel experience, but as a dialectical practice with ideological implications. By exploring British travel literature, this analysis traces the development of travel narratives, examining the discourse surrounding the travel experience as a structural element of the socio-historical context in question. Issues emerging from travel practice and textual representations of otherness reveal that travel texts often provide – perhaps unwittingly – deeper insights into the traveller’s world than the destination itself (Hulme & Youngs 2002: 159).
