Abstract
Nikolaos Politis, born in 1872 in Corfu, was one of the leading figures in the Greek
legal and diplomatic scene. He studied law in France and held significant positions,
such as Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the first representative of Greece
in the League of Nations. His collaboration with Eleftherios Venizelos was crucial in
shaping the country's international policy.
His writings primarily concern international law, with his book titled "The New
Tendencies of International Law" (1927) being particularly noteworthy. This work was
analyzed and translated in the present thesis, focusing mainly on a chapter related to
International Criminal Law. Politis' text combines legal theories with personal
observations while maintaining its timelessness.
Translating such a text requires particular attention to legal terminology and cultural
adaptation. Specialized databases, international law manuals, and bilingual legal
dictionaries were utilized. The challenge of the translation was to combine scientific
accuracy with adaptation to the target language, avoiding the creation of a text that
"smells" of translation. The timelessness of the text also played an important role.
Managing syntactic and grammatical elements, as well as accurately conveying legal
concepts, was critical for the understanding of the text. Additionally, comparing Politis'
views with contemporary legal reality demonstrates the ongoing relevance of his work.
His work remains significant for the study of international relations and law to this day.
