Abstract
ABSTRACT The purpose of the present study is to imprint the clergymen’s demographic picture of the Western Greece’s region during the 150 years’ period time from 1866 to 2016. The clergymen’s elements were being derived by the sources with the purpose to be exposed on tables, which gave us the reason to express comments about the tensions which are shaped as the decades pass. The followed method in the first chapter is the historical, as it is attempted a retrospection of the history of the 6 Metropolis which constitute the object of the research. It included the Metropolites who managed them and the law decrees which defined the limits of the place we examined. The same happened with the enlisting of the local structures in which had been deposited a great part of them. The comparative method was the second method which was used. After the mentioning of the non active and active clergymen’s demographic elements, a comparison of the notions and an expression of some conclusions followed. Demographic elements are: α)The date of birth of every clergyman. b) The place of birth, which can constitute an urban or agricultural parish for the reasons of the research. c) The education’s level of the clergymen’s which was encoded into nine categories. d) The service’s parishes of the clergymen which were divided in urban and agricultural ones in this way. e) The designation’s year, from which results the age of designation. f) The clergymen’s family status who were divided in unmarried(monks) and married. g) The combination of the elements above. These first demographic elements which concern the life of both the non active and the active clergymen gave us information about their mobility from agricultural to urban parishes as the years were passing by. In this mobility of them, they had had their increased studies as an ally, both the active and non active. As well as, the higher level of education, of the clergymen who were not originated by parishes of the familiar Metropolis, was favorable for them to be designed in urban parishes. The active clergymen overcame a lot the non active in this sector and this is how a reduction of their designations in agricultural parishes was noticed in some Metropolis. The number of designations and the average age of designation were developed per decade, to be pictured the impact of the broader social environment on them. The demographic elements that concern the illness and death followed. As a result, to have the clergymen’s mortality be depicted, the causes of death were found and encoded in eleven categories. Second demographic element of death is the year of death and third is the age of death, which comes out with the help of the year of birth too. According to them, an effort was made for the evolution of the causes of death per decade to be depicted, the conformation of their middle age of death, and in combination the middle age of their death per cause of death. The middle age of death in the urban and agricultural parishes and per kind of disease was being imprinted with the assistance of the kind of parishes they were serving. The thesis was organized in two volumes, from which the second examines the demographic findings separately in every Metropolis and the first gathers the total population of non active and active clergymen of all the Metropolis and looks into the same demographic elements as they have been conformed historically, making the equivalent comparison in the end.
