Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to create a template by ear and translate Alain de Botton’s English speech titled Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person into Greek. Following a brief introduction to the video's theme and speaker, the thesis provides an overview of the development and evolution of subtitling as a form of audiovisual translation, emphasizing its importance in today’s globalized and multilingual world. It also discusses the stance of global organizations on subtitling and accessibility issues. The thesis further outlines the guidelines followed as well as the software tools utilized in the process. The main challenges encountered during both the template creation and its translation are then presented, along with the strategies employed to address them, supplemented by example tables where necessary. Specifically, in creating the template, we focused on timing issues related to audio, shot changes, and spatial-temporal aspects such as characters per line and reading speed. Regarding the translation, the thesis examines the necessary modifications made to the template, as well as lexical, terminological, spatial-temporal, grammatical, and transcription challenges.
