Abstract
Cultural and artistic education contributes to the development of basic skills and values such as expression, communication, critical skills and upgrowth of students’ various skills. Therefore, the texts of Greek drama, tragedies and comedies, due to their timelessness and the immense depth of their meanings, have been reduced to a universal good.
This paper presents the role of Greek Drama as a subject of the Ancient Greek Language and Writing course in the secondary education curricula. An attempt will be made regarding the historical presentation of teaching of ancient drama in the Greek educational system from the end of the 19th century up to the dawn of the 21st century. The interpretative character of teaching objectives will also be analyzed and the criteria for selecting dramas to be taught will be evaluated based on their moral-centered meaning and their teaching from the original or from translations signed by important Greek scholars. Particular reference is made to student performances of tragedy and comedy in the context of experiential teaching practice of ancient drama and the teaching of Ancient Comedy will be studied in relation to the causes of "partial exception" of Aristophanes’ comedy within the school classroom. To sum-up , the role of ancient drama in the curriculum High Schools, the methods and content of teaching, and mainly its contribution to the adoption of the principles of humanism and the development of students' theatrical education will be assessed.
