Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate flow theory in preschoolers in the context of organized musical activities and the free play that follows them. A qualitative ac-tion research study was conducted at a kindergarten in Germany, with a sample in-volving eight children aged 5-6 years. A scenario of ten organized lessons, which were directly followed by free play, had been conducted. The research tools included video recording, the researcher’s reflective diary and group discussions with the chil-dren which took place immediately after the end of the free play. Children's behav-iors were observed using Custodero's FIMA (Flow Indicators for Musical Activities) (2005a) coding form, looking for the following indicators: a) challenge seeking indi-cators; self-assignment, self-correction, deliberate gesture b) challenge monitoring indicators; anticipation, expansion, extension c) social context indicators; awareness of adults and peers. Group discussions were analyzed using Custodero's flow indica-tors as themes. The analysis of the research data collected indicated the importance of combining organized activities with free play time, for engaging in flow experi-ence and that the teacher can enhance flow experiences when within organized con-texts sufficient opportunities for self-activity are provided.
